Editing a page is one of the most common tasks you’ll perform in WordPress. Whether you’re updating text, changing an image or adding new content, Gutenberg makes it easy to edit your website using flexible content blocks.
Before you start
You’ll need:
- A WordPress user account with editing permissions
- Access to your website’s WordPress dashboard
- Any text or images you’d like to add to the page
Log in to WordPress
Navigate to your website’s WordPress login page and enter your username and password.
Once logged in, you’ll be taken to the WordPress Dashboard.

Go to Pages
From the menu on the left-hand side of the dashboard, select Pages.
You’ll see a list of all pages currently on your website.

Open the page you want to edit
Find the page you’d like to update and click on its title.
This will open the page in the Gutenberg editor.

Understanding Gutenberg blocks
Gutenberg organises content into individual blocks.
Common block types include:
- Paragraphs
- Headings
- Images
- Buttons
- Lists
- Columns
Click on any block to edit its content or settings.

Edit text content
To update existing text, simply click inside the relevant block and start typing.
Use the toolbar that appears above the block to:
- Make text bold or italic
- Add links
- Change alignment
- Format lists
Your changes are saved as part of the page draft until you update the page.

Replace or edit an image
Click on an image block to reveal its options.
You can:
- Replace the image
- Edit the image
- Add alt text
- Adjust alignment
To replace an image, select Replace and upload a new image or choose one from the Media Library.

Add a new block
To add new content, click the + icon where you’d like the content to appear.
Search for the block you need, such as:
- Paragraph
- Heading
- Image
- Button
- Spacer
Select the block to insert it into the page.

Preview your changes
Before publishing, it’s a good idea to preview the page.
Click Preview in the top-right corner and choose:
- Desktop
- Tablet
- Mobile
This allows you to check that everything looks correct before updating the live page.

Update the page
When you’re happy with your changes, click Update in the top-right corner.
Your edits will immediately be published on the live website.

Common mistakes
- Forgetting to click Update after making changes
- Uploading images that are much larger than necessary
- Accidentally deleting blocks instead of editing them
